My 3 1/2 yr old nephew has a few all-time favorite movies and, of course, favorite characters as well – and one of those movies is How to Train Your Dragon. The main character in the movie befriends a “Night Fury” dragon. The Night Fury’s blue-black hide blends in with the dark skies at night, so it can sneak up on unsuspecting victims. When I saw this Crazy Crystal Colors Heat Transfer / Iron-on, I just knew I needed to make this T-shirt. How cool is it to create unique gifts for loved ones with our KNK machines and materials?!?!
I used the Crazy Crystal vinyl to create the illusion of the dragon on the T-shirt. I had a hard time getting a good photo, as you can see, because the vinyl creates a very high gloss surface.
Materials:
- Cotton T-shirt
- Red Metal Flake Iron-on
- Clear Crazy Crystal Colors Iron-on
Settings:
- Zing! – Note: my Zing typically requires about 10-15% higher force than other Zings. These numbers, like those on the materials reference sheets, should be a starting guide – not a hard and fast rule.
- Blue cap / thick materials blade
- Red cap / standard materials blade
- Red Metal Flake Iron-on (red cap blade)
- Force = 58
- Speed = 10/10
- Passes = 1
- Crazy Crystal Colors Iron-on (blue cap blade)
- Force = 120
- Speed = 10/10
- Passes = 1
Method:
- I used Make-the-Cut to create my file by tracing the image. Next I added my text.
- I test cut the material until I was very happy with my results. I made sure to record my settings for next time.
- I reversed (mirrored) the text and cut the iron-on vinyl.
- Next, I applied the metal flake vinyl – 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-15 seconds.
- Finally, I applied the Crazy Crystal Colors vinyl – 345 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 seconds.
- For both the Red Metal Flake and the Crazy Crystal Colors, wait for the material to cool before peeling off the transfer layer. Remember not to apply heat to the CCC more than once or it will lose its high gloss finish.
Also, to make it Lextra-special, I used my scraps to add his name to the back of the shirt.
And he LOVED it!
This is a great tshirt! Little Lex sure is a cutie! Job well done!
