I love working with vinyl!! So, it was an easy decision what to do for my friend’s birthday. Something with vinyl. He loves owls, so I thought this Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) owl would translate beautifully in vinyl.
I found the original artwork on Shutterstock, an online stock photo site. I used the pixel trace feature in Make-the-Cut (MTC) to import the JPG file. I used my Zing to cut the owl out of black wall vinyl. Using transfer tape, I mounted the piece to the inner of the glass.
( An aside: When I first started doing vinyl projects, I did a lot of cartoon characters for my grand-daughter’s bedroom. It seemed like they all had a million pieces, and I painstakingly placed each cut out piece of vinyl the way I do for a paper piecing. You can image how long it took!! I didn’t know anything about transfer tape. Well, my world changed when a friend introduced me to this magic. Don’t even want to thinking about going back to the pre-transfer tape days. ☺ )
I also made a matching birthday card using the same MTC file, only in a smaller size.
Here is the MTC file for the owl.
It’s gorgeous!! Even better in person!
I am just starting to love vinyl. thanks for the inspiration. your friend will love it!
Fabulous, thank you for generously sharing your project and the file!!!
Very nice. I am glad that I knew about transfer tape from day one, I can’t imagine the time and effort it took you prior to your “discovery”.
This is such a great project and I loved receiving this for my birthday! Thanks so much Carole!
Nice! Don’t you just LOVE vinyl?
Using vinyl on cards makes so much sense! It cuts so perfectly and allows one to use tiny intricate detail. These two projects are adorable! Thank you for sharing them with us!
Great file, Carole – thanks for sharing it!!!
I love vinyl but I don’t like the owl! Oh well!
Great Job, Carole!!! The details come out so nice and sharp in the vinyl and this little guy has lots of detail. I like the idea of repeating the image on the card. Thanks for sharing the ideas and the file.
What a great idea. Your projects are very creative and the owl is adorable. When I read the title, I didn’t know what a day of the dead owl might look like, I love this little guy, he will be perfect for Halloween. I have done vinyl on cards before and this project is spectacular. Thank you for sharing your hard work!
I hate to say this but that owl looks like a frog if u look at it a certain way. Good job though.
Great Project!!! I love working with vinyl, it is very easy and it always cut nice… Thank you for sharing!!
