I have a friend who has been with her husband for years and had no luck getting pregnant. But, it happened and baby Graysen will be here before we know it. His dad is a hunter and so I decided to make this set of 12×12 plaques. It is a thin 1/4″ birch which I stained with a quick drying stain, the color was briarsmoke and it is a brown/gray. Anytime I use stain I like to allow a few days before doing anything. I decided to try to paint these rather than vinyl but was nervous with all of the words on some of the plaques. So I started with a plaque with words and thought if it didn’t work I would use vinyl. So I cut the vinyl for each one and used the vinyl as a stencil for my paint. I should have taken pictures but I really didn’t think they would turn out.
I used an acrylic paint and a makeup wedge which I bought in a pack from the dollar store. I dabbed it in the paint and then dabbed the paint on the excess vinyl until it was almost paint free. Then I dabbed to cover each letter, adding a small amount of paint as needed. By the time I got to the end of the plaque it was dry enough to do a second coat. Because the coats are so thin I think I did about 5 coats and then peeled the vinyl off immediately. And it worked!!! Woohoo!!! It was time consuming but also therapeutic.
